Unfortunate headline reveals lack of focus at Courier blog

Conroe, January 26 – It’s an unfortunate electronic headline for an ailing newspaper that wrote a story about a very serious topic: the Courier blog released a story concerning Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Wayne Mack who gave a short speech about suicide prevention to the Woodlands Township Board of Directors during a meeting on Wednesday, January 23, 2019.

The Courier blog which truncates its headlines in its blog published the story as “Montgomery County justice of the peace calls for more suicide…”

Decades ago, the Courier blog was a robust newspaper. Even as recently as 2000, the paper had a staff that investigated stories, sometimes questioned authority, and sought, on occasion, to report facts.

The Courier blog now has enormous difficulty competing with truth-telling publications, such as The Golden Hammer, Montgomery County’s leading daily newspaper. Rather than providing any sort of investigative reporting, most of the content of the Courier blog is little more than public service announcements and canned press releases.

The paucity of display advertising in the Courier blog reveals how difficult its circumstances have become. Most of the advertising found in the Courier blog comes from its parent company Hearst Newspapers rather than from local businesses.

Obviously, the Courier blog lacks sufficient funds to pay for a decent editor to ensure that mistakes don’t occur.
