San Antonio, June 13 – The Golden Hammer, Montgomery County’s leading daily newspaper, will provide full coverage of the Republican Party of Texas State Convention when the opening gavels comes down at 9 a.m., Thursday, June 14, 2018, in San Antonio at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Since most of the delegates from Montgomery County come from Senatorial District 4, from where Senator Brandon Creighton (R-Conroe) hails, the Convention coverage will focus on the perspective of happenings in the Senatorial District 4 Caucus and happenings to Delegates from Montgomery County.
On Friday, Delegates in Senatorial District 4 will vote on a State Republican Executive Committeeman and Committeewoman. Walter West, II, of East Montgomery County, is running for the position as is Chuck Meyer of The Woodlands. West is the strong conservative candidate in that race. There are at least four candidates for the Committeewoman position. Just recently “establishment” incumbent melinda fredricks announced that she would run for re-election. The incumbent has at least two conservative challenges, including Allison Winter of Magnolia.
The most hotly contested election contest at the Convention is between incumbent State Chairman James Dickey, considered the conservative and The Golden Hammer endorsee, and his challenger Cindy Asche of north Texas who has never served on the State Republican Executive Committee or as a County Republican Chair. Many of the “establishment” Republicans, who believe Republican politicians should have no duty to follow the Republican Party Platform, generally support Asche over Dickey in the other election which will occur Friday at the Convention.
Debate over the Platform is always the most animated aspect of the Convention. These Conventions are a lot of fun and a great time for Montgomery County Republicans to gather in a show of unity.
