Power Top Ten #5: Precinct 1 County Commissioner Mike Meador

Precinct 1 County Commissioner Mike Meador.

Conroe, December 16 – Precinct 1 County Commissioner Mike Meador is the 5th most powerful person in Montgomery County.

The Golden Hammer, Montgomery County’s leading daily newspaper, continues the tradition of listing the Power Top Ten, the ten most powerful people in Montgomery County. The Power Top Ten doesn’t commemorate the ten best people in Montgomery County necessarily, but the most powerful people who are actually able to accomplish political or policy goals. In other words, they can get things done.

At the end of this month, we’ll also commemorate the “Person of the Year Award” for the Montgomery County person who was responsible in 2017 for the most positive change for our community and the “Mad Cow Award” for the worst elected official in Montgomery County during 2017. If you have suggestions, please send them to us at goldenhammermoco@gmail.com or ericyollick@swbell.net. We will treat your suggestion in confidence.

To begin the Power Top Ten this year, The Golden Hammer has already named:

#6 Precinct 3 County Commissioner James Noack

#7 Conroe Independent School District Superintendent Don Stockton

#8 Sheriff Rand Henderson

#9 418th District Judge Tracy Gilbert

#10 State Senator Brandon Creighton.

Power Top Ten #5: Precinct 1 County Commissioner Mike Meador

Precinct 1 County Commissioner Mike Meador can get things done. He’s sleepy. He doesn’t work very hard (although he’s had some health issues recently which may explain why). Doesn’t matter.

The problem with Meador is that all he wants to get done are (1) spending as much of other people’s money as possible and (2) funneling money to the engineers and other Montgomery County vendors who write large checks in the form of political contributions and gifts to him. What Meador has made clear is that doing the right thing has little or nothing to do with his agenda.

Meador votes for every spending proposal before the Commissioners Court. He spearheaded the secretive budget process that County Auditor Phyllis Martin and County Judge Craig Doyal implemented during spring 2017. His one disappointment was that he couldn’t convince the Commissioners Court to give a big pay raise to every County employee.

On the Montgomery Central Appraisal District Board of Directors, Meador reliably votes for policies to increase property tax appraisals, and therefore taxes, as rapidly as possible. On MCAD, Meador also works very hard to get sweetheart appraisals for his family members as well as political supporters.

Mike Meador is the consummate insider. Most of his work is behind the scenes inside of the County government and the Appraisal District.

Meador has insisted on taking a full one-quarter of all road and bridge funds budgeted each year. As a result, he’s built up a gigantic slush fund of accumulated dollars for which he’s accountable to no one. The County Auditor approves all of Meador’s budget amendments, which include raises for his employees, raises for family members who work in the County, a “truck for Gerald,” and purchases of more trucks and equipment than any do-nothing County Commissioner could even imagine.

Several sources have reported that Meador spends at least two hours every weekday watching his favorite soap operas on the television mounted in the wall in his office.

Due to his control over County Judge Doyal and the County Auditor, Meador can spend money on just about anything. One of his favorite spending projects has been the virtually-unused Montgomery County Airport on which Meador has gotten the Commissioners Court to spend millions of dollars.

Vendors, engineers, developers, and government officials love Meador’s style of operation. He’ll give them whatever they want as long as they give him whatever he wants.

Meador’s corruption is a methodology that works in the stinking Montgomery County government right now.
