Conroe, March 20 – William Cody Colburn, age 32, died near 800 West Davis Street in downtown Conroe after he jumped or fell from the inside of a dumpster in which he slept and a Waste Connections garbage truck struck him as the driver drove away. Colburn was homeless and sleeping in the dumpster the morning of March 19, 2019.
Conroe Police Department Detectives talked to several people who were close to Colburn. They told the Criminal Investigation Division investigators that many people had warned Colburn it was not safe to sleep inside the dumpster where he often slept. At about 3:20 a.m. the dumpster was picked up by Waste Connections which operates in the Conroe area.
Video from the truck and from a nearby business showed Colburn jumping or falling out of the side of the dumpster, as the truck emptied it. Colburn was most likely incapacitated as a result of the high fall. The driver did not see that Colburn had fallen beside the truck and struck him as he drove away.
The company and business have been cooperative with the investigation. The Conroe Police Department does not intend to file any charges.
In the early morning hours of March 19, a Conroe Police Officer located Colburn’s body while on patrol near 800 W. Davis. The male was deceased upon arrival.
