Eric Yollick, The Golden Hammer
The Golden Hammer, Montgomery County’s leading daily newspaper, welcomes our new readers and the readers who have been with us since this newspaper began to publish over a year ago. With the many thousands of new readers, it’s fair to reflect upon the question: what is this newspaper all about?
The Golden Hammer seeks to bring the truth to light. In June, 2016, our founder and publisher Eric Yollick sought to reduce government spending in the Montgomery County government to reform that monster. He observed that other so-called newspapers were neither mainstream nor news. They were far-left rationalizers of government growth and corruption. This newspaper is a tool to bring that reform to reality.
Nobel laureate Milton Friedman wrote a great summary of the free man’s approach to government in a free society in Capitalism & Freedom:
“To the free man, the country is the collection of individuals who compose it, not something over and above them. He is proud of a common heritage and loyal to common traditions. But he regards government as a means, an instrumentality, neither a grantor of favors and gifts, nor a master or god to be blindly worshipped and served. He recognizes no national goal except as it is the consensus of the goals that the citizens severally serve…[and] for which the citizens severally strive.”
Therefore, the Publisher and this newspaper have set out on an adventure while asking the question, “How would patriotic Americans react to real fiscal conservatism, seeking substantial reductions in government spending, just like Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan dreamed, in our 21st century society?” Already, it’s fascinating to observe the tribalism and personality-driven nature of politics. Many people who call themselves “conservatives” aggressively protect high levels of government spending in order to protect their small contextual worlds.
No one has ever tried to claim that this newspaper is unbiased. The truth is that no newspaper is unbiased. This newspaper is just open about our bias: we’re conservative, anti-government-spending, and pro-law-enforcement. We believe that when government must act, it should do so ethically and in the light of day. Of course, the very meaning of “conservative” in the modern world is “anti-government spending.”
We seek breaking news stories that will assist readers in knowing what is actually happening in our community, Montgomery County, Texas. This newspaper is not a public service announcement seeking to present the best face of government. We strive to bring you what’s actually happening in politics, business, the community, sports, arts, and entertainment.
We strive to present the facts about the Montgomery County government, which, sadly, is one of the most corrupt local governments in all of Texas, if not the United States. When we can run a positive story about someone or something, we’ll do so, as long as it’s relevant to the issues of reform facing the citizens of Montgomery County, Texas, and the United States. Nevertheless, unlike our competitors we’re not seeking a rosy gloss to make government look and feel good.
It’s called “The Golden Hammer” for two closely-related reasons. First, the focus of this newspaper is to find those instances where government is “hammering the taxpayers.” Second, it commemorates the work of Senator William Proxmire and some of his conservative allies in the United States Senate who presented “The Golden Fleece Award” for two decades where they called out outrageous government spending.
The Golden Hammer presents the truth.
