ERIC YOLLICK, The Golden Hammer
Conroe, May 12 – County Judge Craig Doyal received “The Golden Hammer Award” for “hammering the taxpayers” at the Tuesday, May 9, 2017, Commissioners Court meeting for Doyal’s complete lack of understanding of the tiny Departmental budget of his own County Department. Doyal’s “County Judge” Department is Account 400 for any readers who would like to review the budget directly.
At the April 25, 2017, Commissioners Court meeting, Precinct 1 County Commissioner Mike Meador admitted that “We have no idea what the vacant positions are in each department.” That’s completely ridiculous and merely shows Meador’s and his colleague’s utter laziness, because County employee vacancy reports are quite easy to come by, even for lowly members of the public, let alone a County Commissioner and Board of Directors member of the Montgomery Central Appraisal District such as Meador.
Doyal, in trying to excuse other County Department heads from engaging in any spending cuts at all for the Fiscal 2018 Budget, made the following statement at the April 25 meeting:
“Some departments will have a very difficult time cutting 5% – we have a very minimal operating budget in my department, county judge.”
Doyal’s statement revealed his lack of understanding of the tiny County Department of which he is the Department Director, County Judge, Account 400.
Doyal’s County Judge Department has a $647, 481 budget, which has grown 14% in 2 years.
$66,196 of Doyal’s Department’s budget, or more than 10% of the total, is a vacant position Doyal hasn’t filled in almost 3 years, although he’s included funds for that position each year and charged taxpayers for that amount. Just by eliminating the one vacant position in his County Department, Doyal could easily cut 10% from his budget and no one, not even Doyal, would notice the difference.
Doyal and Meador have become apologists for high taxes and MASSIVE government spending at every turn. What’s so terrible is that Doyal is not trying to publicly – and secretly – browbeat the County Department heads into submitting budgets without any spending cuts at all.
Doyal either doesn’t understand his own Department’s budget or, in the alternative, he might not have been quite honest with the citizens when he made the statement about his own Department having a “very minimal operating budget.”
If anyone deserves “The Golden Hammer Award,” it’s Craig Doyal.
