Conroe, June 25 – On Tuesday June 23, 2020, Pct. 2 Deputy Constable J. Smith, of Precinct 2 Constable Gene DeForest’s team, observed a silver Toyota Tacoma pickup on State Highway 105 East passing vehicles in the left turn lane at a high rate of speed. As Deputy Smith pursued the truck, the driver made attempts to evade capture, eventually pulling into a local mechanic shop in an attempt to hide.
The driver was detained, along with a second suspect in the back seat; however, the front seat passenger ran from the scene. After airing a description of the fleeing suspect, he was found on a nearby street by Deputy T. McLaughlin, and subsequently returned to the scene. All three suspects were found to be juveniles.
Upon contacting the truck’s owner, it was found that the back seat passenger was the son of the owner. The owner came to the scene to retrieve his vehicle, and informed Deputy Smith that he had not given any of the three permission to drive or use the pickup.
After consulting with an Assistant County Attorney, charges were accepted as follows: Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle against the driver and the back seat passenger (the owner’s son); Reckless Driving against the driver; and Evading Arrest and Detention against the front seat passenger who fled the stop. All three suspects were placed into Montgomery County Juvenile Detention by Deputy Smith without further incident.
