Community policing at work: Sheriff’s Office, citizens join up to foil car thief

Perp Jonathon Meridan didn’t know what hit him when the Sheriff’s Department and a citizen joined to foil his attempted car theft.

Conroe, May 15 – Community policing became a reality in Montgomery County on Thursday, May 11, 2o17, when a citizen notified an off-duty Sheriff’s Office Sergeant that a male was breaking into vehicles in the parking lot of the West Montgomery County Park Complex located at 16716 FM 149 in Montgomery, while families enjoyed sports.

The Sergeant began checking the area for the suspect, at which time he was approached by two more citizens who advised the suspect had just stolen a vehicle and was driving out of the park. The citizen provided a description of the stolen vehicle and the Sergeant carefully went after the suspect while advising on-duty Deputies of the situation.
Responding Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Deputies stopped the stolen vehicle at FM 149 and Lone Star Parkway. During the traffic stop, the Deputies identified the while male perp as 34 year-old Jonathon Drew Merdian whom they arrested for theft of a motor vehicle.
Sheriff Rand Henderson has commended the citizens for reporting the suspicious activity and the Sergeant
for taking initiative to ensure the suspect didn’t get away while dispatching on-duty units to assist. This story is
an example of Community Policing in action.
