Austin, January 23 – Texas House of Representatives Speaker Dennis Bonnen announced his committee assignments for the 86th Texas Legislature this morning. All three Representatives from Montgomery County, Steve Toth of The Woodlands, Will Metcalf of Conroe, and Cecil Bell of Montgomery, received very important committee assignments.
Speaker Bonnen appointed Metcalf to the powerful House Calendars Committee, to the International Relations and Economic Development Committee, and to the Natural Resources Committee. Metcalf will serve as Vice Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee.
Metcalf spoke with The Golden Hammer this afternoon and said, “I’m very excited. Natural Resources is the one I’ve been trying to get on for two sessions. This assignment is important for Montgomery County.”
Metcalf was very humble about his assignment to the powerful House Calendars Committee, which largely controls the flow of legislation to the floor of the Texas House of Representatives. He said, “This will be my first session on it. I’m looking forward to seeing how the committee operates.”
Metcalf is very optimistic about the new leadership in Austin. “This session is going well. The Lieutenant Governor, Governor, and Speaker Bonnen are working very well together. I believe there is a real chance we will see genuine statewide property tax reform come out of this Legislative Session.”
The Speaker appointed Toth to the House Appropriations Committee and to the Culture, Recreation, and Tourism Committee.
Toth explained, “It’s a good day for House District 15 and its communities to know they have an advocate in their corner.” Toth noted that the Appropriates Committee prepares the Budget for the State of Texas. “The Appropriations Committee begins every morning at 7 a.m. and works until 10 a.m. when the House usually goes into session. You’re literally sprinting from the Committee room to the House floor every morning. The Committee will then convene as soon as the House finishes for the day. It’s a grueling amount of work and I adore it!” Toth said.
Toth also said the he asked for the nomination to the Tourism Committee, because “South Montgomery County has become such a major tourist destination.”
Bell received assignments to the Appropriations Committee and to the Land and Natural Resources Committee, which would also seem a very important assignment for a Representative for Montgomery County.
