Eric Yollick, The Golden Hammer
The Golden Hammer, Montgomery County’s leading daily newspaper, endorses Governor Greg Abbott for re-election as Governor in the March 6, 2018, Republican Primary Election. Under the Texas Constitution, the Governor of Texas is not a particularly powerful position, but the office does give its holder an excellent platform to speak out on issues.
Governor Abbott has served as an excellent spokesman on many important conservative issues.
Abbott has consistently been 1000% Pro-Life during his entire political career, as a district judge, Supreme Court Justice, Attorney General, and Governor. In 2017, Governor Abbott signed legislation into law banning partial birth abortions in Texas. He also signed a law into effect that requires either the burial or cremation of an aborted fetus.
Tollroads are an issue particularly important to the citizens of Montgomery County, because we suffer from two members of the County Commissioners Court – the County Judge and the Precinct 2 County Commissioner – who are acting in rogue fashion to foist a tollroad on the citizens. TxDOT has indicated they’d build the road without tolling it, but the County Judge and the Commissioner want to build the road as a tollroad instead so they can funnel engineering dollars into the hands of their favorite political and criminal legal defense fund contributors. Tollroads are cronyism at its worst.
Governor Abbott has taken a strong stand against tollroads. In October, 2017, Abbott directed TxDOT not to proceed with additional plans for tollroads. TxDOT backed off of many tollroad plans. Sadly, Montgomery County’s farcical tollroad project may be one of the only tollroads built in Texas during the next few years.
Governor Abbott has consistently been a strong support of gun rights and the Second Amendment. In 2015, he signed the open carry and campus carry laws into effect. In 2017, Abbott led the fight to reduce license to carry fees to make it easier for Texas citizens to enjoy their constitutional rights.
Abbott has shown great leadership on sanctuary cities and illegal immigration, property tax and appraisal district reform, and requiring local governments to comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
Texas needs Greg Abbott’s leadership another four years. Voters should return him to the Governor’s Office in the 2018 election.
